Why Just Sugar?

Why am I building this site? As a kid I was always drinking Coca Cola or some other soft drink. My mother said I would outgrow this but I didn't. However, in the 1980's I started to find Coke and other softdrinks seeming to turn bitter and harsher than before. I got to the point where I rarely wanted a Coke, ever. Then, in 1989, travelled to Australia. While on the road on a surfing trip there was usually little else to drink other than Coke or Pepsi. Wow! what was different? Coke and Pepsi were fantastic again.

So I brought a can of each home with me to see what the difference was all about. I checked the ingredients. Australia Coke said SUGAR and USA coke said CORN SRYUP AND OR SUGAR. As time passed I started to notice almost all products with sugar tasted better* than products with corn syrup. One day I called the Coca Cola company. I discovered that there is a thing called Passover Coke for Jewish people. Naturally it is made during passover, comes in the 2 liter bottles and contains sugar, not corn syrup. The other thing I learned is that some Coke plants still make Coke with Sucrose (sugar syrup). One such plant until recently was Sacramento California. Since I live a few hours from there I was loading up my truck with cases of the classic Coke cans (the sucrose syrup was only in the classic cans and two liter bottles). I discovered I loved it as much as I had as a kid. Sadly This plant discontinued sugar at the end of 2004.

Since my discovery I have done my own taste tests with friends and family and have yet to find anyone who prefers the corn syrup version. Coca Cola spokesman Mart Martin says that there is no discernible difference.# However, buyers of Mexico Coke in glass bottles, and those who have taken my taste tests tend to disagree. In my opinion Coke is just protecting their interests in the fact that corn syrup is cheaper and dissolves easier and does not crystalize. Funny though, I didn't pay more for my sugar Coke from Sacramento.
